PythonAnywhere Releases Online Integrated Development Environment and Web Hosting Service

New tool for developers streamlines creation and deployment of websites using the Python programming language

London, UK (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

PythonAnywhere, a new cloud-based Integrated Development Environment (IDE) today announced the launch of their Python Web Application Hosting plan. Using this allows Python developers to create their own websites quickly, without the complex configuration historically required.

“Releasing PythonAnywhere let us provide the perfect tool for any developer wanting to start up a new online service”, stated Giles Thomas, co-founder of PythonAnywhere. “Every Python developer knows that the language has a huge number of useful extensions and web application frameworks, but getting everything installed can be tricky. Simultaneously maintaining a web server adds a lot of work, most of it boring - we know because we do it daily! Essentially, PythonAnywhere hosting takes that work out of the programmer’s hands, so you can focus on doing what you do best - writing code to fit your customers’ needs.”

Originally, the first version of PythonAnywhere was launched in May 2011, and gave programmers a simple way to get started with cloud development: a place online where they could edit and run their code from their web browsers, even on mobile devices such as iPads. Said Thomas: “this rapidly became popular, but our users kept telling us one thing: that they wanted to be able to run their websites on our servers too. Producing our new Web Application Hosting plan made that possible.”

Across-the-board support for all Python web application frameworks that support the WSGI protocol - including Django, web2py, Flask and Bottle - allows developers to create their content using the tools of their choice. “Making it easy to use existing popular Open Source frameworks, instead of creating our own, was a deliberate choice” explained Thomas. “Freedom is important to us, so customers can use the knowledge and the code that they already have, and they don’t need to worry about lock-in - if they outgrow our service, or simply choose to move to the website to their own hardware later, there’s nothing stopping them.”

Trying out PythonAnywhere is easy, with a free plan that supports full development capabilities and simple web hosting in a pythonanywhere.com subdomain; there is also a $5/month plan that provides more computing power, and the new Web Application hosting plan, which allows you to use your own domain name, costs $10/month.
